StarForge Outreach: July 13, 2006
On July 13, 2006 thirteen members of StarForge joined three members of the Davis Astronomy Club to visit the Girl Scout Space camp, a week-long event featuring activities on air, space and astronomy. StarForge brought a small army of telescopes, Night Sky Network activities and their smiling faces to help bring the magic of astronomy to a crowd of almost 150!

Meet the Volunteers

The only good pictures of Kevin where always with his head down! He was too busy coordinating the StarForge outreach effort. What a dedicated guy! His daughter Heather was his hard-working assistant all night. She is an outreach powerhouse all on her own!

The Graybill family: Bill & Toni with their daughters Amaryllis and Caroline with their homemade (okay, one commercial one too) telescopes.

Yep, Dawn was there but she was usually behind the camera.

Bill from StarForge and Vinita from the Davis Astronomy Club. Vinita also ran the entire week-long girl scout event! Now that is talent!

Jim was working hard all night!

John from the Davis Astronomy Club.

Brian from StarForge.

Setting Up

Whilel StarForge set up....

The Girl Scouts assembling and enjoyed a dance to the Galaxy Song by Monty Python.

Starting the Evening
StarForge members introduced themselves, then discussed telescope etiquette, proper use of the flashlight, types of telescopes, and best of all, learned how to use a star map. But StarForge provided no ordinary star map, they distributed "Where are the Distant Worlds?" star maps provided by the Night Sky Network.

Astronomers at Full Speed!

Caroline at her station.

Amaryllis at her Tiger Scope with dad, Mark, in the background.

Brian wow'd the kids with his telescope's awesome view of Jupiter and four of its moons..

Yes, Brian, we get the point: "Look up!" ....Moving on....

Caroline swims in a throng of eager observers many of them looking through a telescope for the first time in their lives!

Heather runs the laptop all night.

I promised these folks they would be on the website: so here they are! :)

Kevin and Heather, a fantastic outreach team.

John knows how to work the crowd!
